Jefferson Lab retains JDG to conduct 4 high profile searches

JDG Associates, Executive Search Consultants, has been retained by Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab) to fill four leadership roles as the Lab enters an exciting period of mission growth. Jefferson Lab, located in Newport News, VA, is a U.S. Department of Energy national laboratory dedicated to solving some of the most challenging scientific and engineering problems in nuclear physics and applied science and technology.

The first role is Associate Laboratory Director, Energy & Applied Science & Technology (ALD, EAST), a member of the Lab’s Tier 1 leadership team reporting to the Deputy Lab Director for Science and Technology/Chief Research Officer. This outward-facing role provides strategic and operational leadership for the EAST Directorate, with a focus on cultivating new sponsor relationships and expanding programs across DOE Office of Science (BES, NE), DoD, NNSA, NASA, and industry. Ideal candidates bring 15-20 years of internationally recognized experience, including 5+ years leading large, complex, multidisciplinary research programs or user facilities, along with a track record of growing programs across a broad sponsor base.

The second role is Project Director, High Performance Data Facility (HPDF), who will lead the HPDF team from initial concept through completion, coordinating closely with Jefferson Lab, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, technical teams, computer vendors, and construction managers on a facility encompassing computational systems, data storage, software, and conventional facilities elements. Ideal candidates bring 15+ years leading teams on highly complex technical objectives, including 5+ years managing technical projects of $10 million or more, along with experience managing research computing projects within the DOE laboratory system.

The third role is Associate Laboratory Director, Data and Computational Science (ALD, DCS), a member of the Lab’s Tier 1 leadership team reporting to the Deputy Lab Director for Science and Technology/Chief Research Officer, provides strategic and operational leadership for the Lab’s Scientific Computing and Scientific Data divisions and the Data Office. The ALD will lead the transition of the HPDF from a major DOE project to a premier DOE user facility, while advancing research in scientific computing, data science, and AI-enabled discovery in close partnership with the DOE Office of Science’s Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR) program.

The fourth role is Associate Laboratory Director, Fundamental Physics (ALD, FP), a member of the Lab’s Tier 1 leadership team reporting to the Deputy Lab Director for Science and Technology/Chief Research Officer, provides strategic and operational leadership for the Lab’s Fundamental Physics portfolio, including Nuclear Theory, Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) Science, and High Energy Physics. The ALD will deliver EIC operations and advance non-CEBAF physics programs, expanding the Lab’s impact in nuclear structure, quantum chromodynamics (QCD), and beyond-Standard-Model physics while preparing the Lab for its next generation of flagship scientific programs.
